Description: Adult American cockroaches are a reddish-brown to dark brown (except for a tan or light yellow band around the shield behind the head). They are about 25 to 40mm long and they have wings capable of flight.
Biology: They are often found in moist areas such as damp sewers and basements etc. They can easily be transported into homes in boxes from infested premises. Egg capsules protrude from the body for a few hours to four days before being deposited prior to hatching. One egg capsule is formed each week until 6 to 14 have been produced. Each capsule contains 16 eggs. Development to adult averages about 15 months but can vary.
Control: As with all the cockroach species, a combination of cockroach traps, gels and residual insecticides is the main approach. The effectiveness of the various residual insecticide formulations may be enhanced by using them in conjunction with insecticides applied as ULVs (Ultra Low Volume), mists, fogs or aerosols.
